Unit 2 Overview

During the next five weeks we will read Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet, and most of our classwork and homework will have something to do with the book.

Daily, students will:

  • Read the book on their own
  • Contribute to classroom discussions of the book
  • Be able to correctly spell and use vocabulary words

For nightly homework students will write four sentences, each correctly using a vocabulary word from the book. In class, we will analyze and revise the sentences. Each day (Tuesday through Friday) we will have a spelling “quizlet” for the four words of the night before. Each week I will give the students a handout with the vocabulary/spelling words for the week, and I will also post the words here.

This will be our background homework for the entire unit, but we will also do other activities along the way. I will explain these to the students as we go along, as well as post the relevant information here.
