Homework and resources for Field School of Charlottesville's English Class A

Homework Due Thursday, March 12
Read "The Wicked Stepmother" and answer questions in your composition book. Also answer this question: What are the main differences between this story and "The Juniper Tree"?
During this unit we will be reading short fiction by acknowledged masters of the form, including Jorge Luis Borges, Guy De Maupassant, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe and many others. The readings will be chosen with the idea in mind that among the best qualities of great short fiction is its accessibility on a variety of levels, not the least of which is its entertainment value even to middle school boys.
Students will continue to answer stock questions about each story that we read, further reinforcing their analytical note-taking skills. We will also try our hands at writing short stories, write short informal essays on fiction along the way, and culminate with an open-book, open-note essay examination.
We will also lay the foundation for a Field School Literary and arts quarterly journal ("Field Book"?), to showcase student work.
